[Whether Hange had been sleeping or not is irrelevant because as soon as they cotton on to what Levi is saying, they are up with all the energy they can muster, grabbing Levi's hand to thoroughly inspect the fingers.

Hmm.. it definitely seems that way — and after grabbing a ruler for good measure can confirm it — and once held up against Levi's other hand it is easy to see that the black fingers must have grown to the digits' original lengths, seeing as they are identical in shape and size to the uninjured fingers of his other arm.]

I have to say, I agree. And they still don't feel any different to last time I looked at them?

No.

[ He lets them do-- whatever it is they're doing, measuring him, inspecting both his hands. Something is at the tip of his tongue. ]

[ He bites his lip slightly, sighs. ]

If I close my eyes, it's just like when I had all of them.

[So its not only the shape or the strength, but they must have regained the nerves as well. As one final test Hange gives one of the fingers a rather hard pinch, just to ascertain that the evaluation is correct. And if it is...]

Alright. I'm going to try it.

[In the eye. Most likely, it won't do anything. At worse it turns the eyeball into a rock, but it doesn't work anyway. At best — and this is a hopeful best — Hange could get their full eyesight back.]

[ It sure is. Levi flinches and pulls at his hand instinctively, trying to get it away from the source of pain. ]

[ He does honestly expect something more though, blinking twice at Hange as if not quite sure if he heard that correctly. Does that mean -- ]

Okay. [ Pause. ] Do you want help?

[They'd already made their mind up to try it assuming nothing disastrous suddenly happened to Levi's hand, but seeing as it's stalled for several times and seems to be, well, done, that only served to solidify the decision.

After all, it's just a broken eye. What's the worst that could happen? It's probably a miracle that Hange held off this long on experimenting on themself with the magic water, honestly.]

Just keep watch. I don't think anything crazy would happen, but on the off-change I start growing rock out my face and need someone to stab my eye out...

[Absolutely not a joke btw, but they don't expect it to happen.]

Sit here for a second.

[Patting the edge of the sofa, Hange disappears off into their little lab/hoarding room, coming back a few minutes later with what looks to be a repurposed glass ink jar complete with a dropper as they take a seat next to Levi.]

So, I don't think I need too much of it, so I figured I might use this. Enough to cover the whole eye... I could just pour it in, but it's just going to spill everywhere if I do that.

Got it.

[ It didn't sound like a joke. Hange might spout all sorts of weird crap but he knows them well enough, and honestly, he's probably the right person for that job. ]

[ He moves over to sit on the couch as instructed, waiting patiently for his ~~significant annoyance~~ best friend to reemerge with the magic water. The dropper tool will probably be helpful considering they don't need a lot for this. He gestures at it. ]

You're doing that yourself?

[ He could help! ]

[Hange was going to do it themself... but considering the significant annoyance is sat right there now with two working hands..]

I suppose it could be easier if you did it, so you can see what's going on. I can't see out of that eye so I'd just be guessing...

[Alright, this is a much better idea. The bottle gets passed over to Levi as Hange removes the eyepatch, blinking and wiping at the injured eye for a moment before tilting their head upwards towards the ceiling...]

[ He takes it wordlessly, standing up so he can lean over them better. His normal hand's fingertips rest above and below their scarred eye, pulling gently to coax the lids open, his touch soft, caring even. He hasn't forgotten how they treated his own scars, after all. ]

Open up.

[ Once they do, he's dropping three drops into their eye - and then one more on each eyelid, on the most scarred looking areas. Then he sets the dropper down and closes the vial. ]

...It could take a while to work.

[ It took over a month for his new fingers to start showing... but then, Hange doesn't actually need to grow back any body parts, just repair the scarring. ]

[ At least it doesn't seem to be turning into a rock (yet). ]

So far so good.

[Hange sits there as still as they can while Levi administers the droplets, fighting the urge to either reach up and wipe it away or to blink it away. Once the last one is in they keep their head like that for a while longer, blinking one.. two.. three times to ensure that the water has evenly spread over the eye before tilting their head back into its usual position.]

Ugh! Feels weird!

[Whoops— perhaps they should clarify:]

It doesn't hurt or anything, it feels fine. Just feels wrong putting stuff in your eye like that.

[But it's all in the name of science, so it's fine. Hange sits there a moment longer waiting for something to happen, anything, but there's nothing. Everything feels normal, like they hadn't done anything at all.]

I don't feel any different, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see. Thanks Levi!

[ They indeed should because Levi immediately tenses with concern, but then just huffs and rolls his eyes at the explanation. ]

No shit.

[ If he's ever needed eye drops of any sort, he very much gets the feeling. If he hasn't... he probably still does, because that seems gross. He does still sort of watch them out of the corner of his eye, though, just in case something else happens, but that seems to be it. ]

[ He grumbles an acknowledgement for the gratitude without actually returning it as usual, and gets up to make some tea, as per their routines. Hange may not be growing anything (yet) but they still just suffered a procedure so naturally Levi has to treat them to a cup. ]

If this works... [ Wait, no, that's stupid. ]

[By the time Levi has made the tea, Hange has their eyepatch back on and is back to rooting through whatever crap they've been writing out in their notebook this time— it really is business as usual once more.

They cannot allow themselves to be too hopeful, not yet, for the incident with Levi's eye could have simply been a huge fluke, but who knows. It would be nice to have proper depth perception again, even if the eyepatch is kind of a cool fashion statement.]

If it works, it's kinda cool, right? Think of all the others we could help out. We could dunk Erwin in it for starters.

[Surely Levi is thinking the same.]

[ Levi sets a mug down in front of them and sits back down on the couch with his own, tentatively picking it up in his usual way with his half-new hand. The grip seems normal, he even feels the warmth from the cup, but it still feels so unreal. ]

[ That is exactly what he'd been thinking about, and he glances at Hange with a mix of hope and concern. ]

Worth a try, right? Bet he'd look really funny with a tiny little hand growing out.

[ He sort of wiggles his free hand's fingers next to his shoulder to mimic how he imagines that would look. Even fingers had been awkward; an entire arm? That's going to look grotesque until it's at the proper proportions. Worth it, though, right? ]

[Glad to see they both have the same, insane idea. Hange watches Levi's little wiggle as they try to picture what the hand would look like as it begins to grow, and they let out a laugh as it really is the funniest thing.]

Hah! It's worth trying just to see that. It would probably take months to grow too...

[For how calm their friend often is, it would honestly be hilarious seeing him wander around with his tiny baby arm as if nothing is wrong. But ah, the main point is that if it works he could potentially have a fully working arm by the time the year's up. Just imagine the possibilities...]

If this works, we'll definitely try it. And if dunking in the pool itself works... I wonder how many other people here could be healed by it.. .

[Of course Hange has no desire to make it public knowledge before they're done testing it out and using it... you wouldn't want the general public to trash the place and ruin it, after all.]

[ Well. Levi might insist that Hange is the insane one out of the two of them, but there's a reason they get along as well as they do. ]

Probably. I don't think I'll be able to take anything he says seriously.

[ There's plenty of things he'd still be able to take seriously, but there's no need to think about that part now. No, just three besties going about business as usual except somebody's got a tiny little arm coming out of their shoulder-- ]

[ Or maybe it wouldn't be silly like that at all, but now he can't stop thinking about it. ]

...I haven't met many people with missing body parts here. But you're right, there may be someone else who could use it.

[ That's not really something he's insistent on keeping to himself. But then, they did let the Leaders know what they found out so far - even if it didn't include growing back fingers from scratch back then - and he certainly isn't going to make an announcement, so. ]

[hange is definitely daydreaming about Erwin's potential arm now, considering the possibilities. Would it be full sized yet grow centirmetre by centimetre until a stump becomes an arm? Or would it become a tiny, full arm first which gradually grows thicker, much like trees adding an extra ring to their bark each year? Hmm.....]

I haven't either, but there are a lot of people who live here, and we don't know everyone.

[But before making an announcement of any sort they need to be certain it works for various types of injuries, and this was not a lucky fluke. Only time shall tell.....]

Let's not tell anyone about this yet, though. Not until we know the outcome, whether it's good or bad. But I'm hoping I won't have to ask you to stab my eye out, that would be a bummer!

[ Only one way to find out, it seems! ]

[ There's a little noise of agreement, because ultimately Levi does subscribe to making things better for everyone, so yes, that includes both sharing helpful things and making sure they're not actually harmful. ]

[ He gingerly picks up his tea and takes a sip. ]

You're not getting much use out of it anyway.

[ Just being a little asshole, no worries. He agrees. ]

I know that, but it doesn't mean I want you to take it out! What if it hurts?

[Who knows honestly- it doesn't work but sometimes the light makes it ache which suggests something back there is trying to hold on.]

Though I suppose if it comes to that... hey, I can be an authentic sea robber, can't I? Hah!

You can. But you don't have to move to a boat and shit in a bucket just because you've lost an eye.

[ And that would be part of authenticity. ]

[They wouldn't be one of those mean sea-robbers but one of the good ones. Helping people out and claiming rewards for it while traversing port to port. Talk about a life of adventure!! Ah- but this world isn't suited to that, is it?]

Though there isn't a sea here, all we have is that giant lake and we already know what surrounds it, so that's no fun. I guess we won't be living on a boat after all, Levi.

[Because naturally if Hange is moving to a boat, he is coming with!]

[ Yeah, that question is just going to be met by Levi's look of abject horror and not deigned with a response. ]

[ HE WOULD ABSOLUTELY BE COMING WITH and also dragging Erwin along at least, but that would definitely be after long, fruitless arguing and upgrading the ship to have running water and plumbing. But he wouldn't leave Hange to their own devices, no. ]

[Hange lets out a HEAVY sigh.]

But Levi, you have to like boats! Remember the boat we took to Marley? It was nice, wasn't it?

[ he bristles. that whole trip was depressing and while he (luckily) wasn't sick on the boat, it's hardly a memory he likes dwelling on because he'd spent most of that trip thinking about how Erwin should have been there to see all that amazing shit instead. ]

[Well HANGE thinks it was a ton of fun, just as this hypothetical boat trip is also going to be.]
